Walking routes through Leidschendam-Voorburg, Rijswijk, Voorschoten, and Wassenaar
The Landgoederenzone Zuid-Holland (South Holland Country Estate Zone) is an area where the urban elites built their country houses in the 17th and 18th centuries in order to enjoy space and tranquility. The zone is situated behind the dunes between Westland and Hillegom, parallel to the seashore. Even though the number of country estates and mansions has decreased over time, approximately eighty have survived in this zone. Residents, tourists, and recreationists usually love to take a walk in the park of a country house that is open to the public, or to have a look inside country houses with a public function. Walking routes have been mapped across the southern part of the South Holland Country Estate Zone to help the public find their way through the zone. These are routes in the municipalities of Leidschendam-Voorburg, Rijswijk, Voorschoten, and Wassenaar. The routes are marked in the field. At a number of locations along the routes, you will find information panels to tell you more about the country estates and the country houses in the immediate vicinity.
This website provides information about the routes and links to download the routes. In addition, the site provides brief information about all of the country houses you will see along the routes. There is one overnight walk that will take you across the entire area, and there are five short walks that will guide you along country estates in Leidschendam-Voorburg, Rijswijk, Voorschoten, and Wassenaar.
